This chicken portrait series is the first oil painting Aubrey Clarke has done in quite awhile. Although she has an oil painting background\, printmaking has captured most of her time and attention in recent years.  For a long time in the history of Western Art\, oil painting was a preferred medium for highly regarded  subjects. As for animals\, they were considered last on the list of importance as a subject. She has chosen the medium of oil and the genre of portraiture as vehicles for expressing her respect for the sentience\, individuality\, and diversity of chickens. She perceives the brush as an ideal vehicle for their feathers\, in the way it fluidly mimics them.
